How We Diagnose Your Warning Lights

When booking a diagnostic appointment, you might think "Isn't Diagnostics just plugging in a machine?"
The simple answer is no. We diagnose very thoroughly so when we do the fix it is permanent, we don't just replace parts and hope for the best like some do. We take multiple steps to diagnose your car's faults.
1. Information
Once you arrive here at Hardy's for your car diagnostic test, we will ask you to run through a detailed explanation of the problem as you are experiencing it. The clearer a picture we have of the problem the quicker and more cost effectively we can deal with it.
2. Recreate
We create the same conditions you describe to recreate the fault. Often our tech will be able to diagnose the problem from the feel or sound of the problem. That could be a test drive or other physical tests.
3. Scan
This is where we plug in our car diagnostic equipment. It's more complex than that though, the tech reviews the feedback from the machine and reads the output data from the relevant systems. This should give them the insight needed to get straight to the problem.
4. Inspect
Once the area of the fault has been identified, we visually inspect the components in that area. If there is nothing obviously wrong, we then continue to take the next steps.
5. Data
Check the data from the cars control module to find anything outside of normal parameters that can give us a clue.
6. Bulletins
Common faults for a particular model and year are detailed in Technical Service Bulletins online, so we'll check them for known faults and test those first. If that doesn't solve it, we rule that fault out and it quickly narrows our search for the failed component.
7. Confirm
With our diagnostic interface we can activate components and run tests from the computer to confirm the fault. Our techs will then manually test the conductivity of the component to confirm the diagnosis.
